Haunted Barns and Junkyard in Vincentown, NJ

This weekend was a busy one and we only managed one quick trip to a local haunt. Given the state of this place's website we weren't expecting much, but it can be good to enjoy a little Halloween cheese from time to time.

The Haunted Barns and Junkyard seemed to be a low-key family run operation. As a result, there were probably only 6 or 8 people working in there, so the attraction relied heavily on static props and scenes rather than actors lurking in the shadows. And those few who were lurking didn't seem too interested in the element of surprise. Well, actually there was one little kid dressed as an alien who jumped out from a pile of fake aliens and said, "Boo!' That was pretty cute.

The props and scenes on display weren't too memorable. I can say this confidently because I was just at this place 2 days ago and can only remember one of them, which was a dismal nursing home scene. There was an actual old lady sitting in a rocking chair in there. Definitely more sad than scary. Also disappointing was the corridor of rats, which had been hyped up to us by a couple of the employees. It turned out to just be a 5-yard long walk through a dark tunnel while somebody was squeezing a squeaky toy on the other side of the wall.

While the attraction was generally lame, it was hard to totally hate it because you could tell that the few people involved were trying pretty hard. Also, they gave us free juice and cookies at the end.

VisualsProps, costumes, lighting, etc.3 / 10Weak costumes, mostly cheesy plastic props. More goofy than scary.
AtmosphereWas it creepy or just goofy?5 / 10Well, I suppose it was dark and fairly quiet.
ActorsDid you hire theater nerds or frat boys?2 / 10Hardly any actors worked there, but the dude in the wolf mask gets an extra point for chasing down some little kids in the parking lot.
CreativityI'm tired of the same old crap.5 / 10Though the results weren't always great, you could see that a lot of the home-built scenes were a labor of love.
ValueI demand satisfaction!2 / 5Fifteen bucks was too much for a homemade setup, but the free refreshments helped.
EfficiencyAre the inmates running the asylum?5 / 5Juice and cookies!
Overall22 / 50If you love juice and cookies like I do, just spend your $15 on a gallon of Apple Juice and 3 bags of oreos and stay home and watch the Evil Dead instead.
